Pentecost greetings!

In her Pentecost letter, the presiding bishop wrote, " In baptism we discover that we are meant to be for others, in the same way that God is for us." With the twin devastations of Cyclone Nargis in Myanmar and the 7.9 earthquake in central China, there is no better time to take that to heart and to aid our brothers and sisters in desperate need in Asia.

Episcopal Relief and Development (ERD) is hard at work getting aid to both Myanmar and China. For more details and to find out how to help, follow the links below:

On a happier note, our articles this month are full of celebrations and things to celebrate. Rejoice!

This June is the fifth anniversary of the Barbara C. Harris Camp & Conference Center, and coincidentally the birth month of Bishop Harris herself, so it's time to celebrate!

All are invited to the camp in Greenfield, NH, on Sunday, June 22 between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. for a day of fun: camp activities, food and fellowship in a relaxed and beautiful setting.

Cathedral Dean Jep Streit is leading the cathedral congregation in change venues from the cathedral to the camp for the day and encourages other congregations to do so. "It'll be interesting and fun and a great way to spend a Sunday. Why not!" Streit said. Activities and a cookout will run from 11 a.m. to 2:45 p.m., followed by a worship service at 3 p.m. Attendees may arrive at any time and are requested to RSVP to allow planners to get a head count; buses will be provided for those who need transportation.

To date, the camp has been a great success; it serves more than 800 campers in a variety of programs annually. At the June 2003 dedication of the camp, Dorothy Dottin, a member of the Cathedral Church of St. Paul, called it "a real honor to Bishop Harris and a blessing," and Bishop Shaw called it "a dream come true." Five years later, the camp is living up to its promise.
Youth from St. Stephen's, Boston lobby for summer jobs funding
St. Stephen's, Boston kids lobby for summer jobs
St. Stephen's teens stopped by the diocesan offices after a visit to the State House to lobby legislators for increased funding for summer jobs. The group carried posters with messages from 400 teens who want summer jobs. Five teens from the St. Stephen's Church youth program in Boston visited Massachusetts legislators May 2 to lobby for increased state funding for summer jobs for youth as part of their ongoing anti-violence efforts. Last year, nearly 8,000 teens applied for summer jobs through the Boston Youth Fund (BYF) but fewer than 3,500 teens actually received jobs. Within days, the House of Representatives approved an additional $1 million for the Youth Works budget - an improvement, although still short of the $2.5 million in additional funding requested by advocates.

Cathedral's Monday Lunch Program will celebrate 25th anniversary
Scenes from Monday Lunch Images: Courtesy the Cathedral Church of St. Paul
The remarkable thing about the Monday Lunch Program isn't that 150 hungry people in need can sit down to a warm meal and warmer spirits every week.

The remarkable thing is that the Cathedral Church of St. Paul, with its partners at Trinity Church in Concord, St. Michael's Church in Milton, Christ Church in Needham, St. John's Church in Newtonville and Ecclesia Ministries, has been making this possible every Monday for the last 25 years.

To honor this amazing milestone, all are welcome to a celebration of the volunteers, partners, stories and spirit that are part of the program on Monday, June 2 from 4 to 5:30 p.m. in Sproat Hall of the Cathedral Church of St. Paul. RSVP by Tuesday, May 27 to Stephanie Spellers( sspellers@diomass.org; 617-482-4826 x318).

Volunteers are always welcome at the Monday Lunch Program; you can arrive at 10 a.m. to help set up, or take a long lunch hour to serve food from 11:30 to 12:45 p.m. For more information, please contact Stephanie Spellers (see above) or Leslie Gleason ( leslie.gleason@state.ma.us; 781-559-8057).

South Shore Deanery to host third annual Cape June Jubilee

It's the third annual Cape June Jubilee! What could be a more fun way to raise money and awareness for the fight against HIV/AIDS in Africa than walking, biking or rollerblading along the Cape Cod Canal, followed by fellowship and a barbecue lunch? And if you don't feel energetic enough to walk, bike or rollerblade, sponsoring someone who is is an excellent way to contribute to the effort.

The money raised by this event goes to supporting programs that bring badly needed fresh-drinking-water wells, farm animals, AIDS medications and AIDS education to Africa.

N.B.: The Alewife Deanery Jubilee fund raiser has been postponed until Oct. 25, so it's now possible to participate in both.

St. John's Church in Jamaica Plain celebrated its newly renovated downstairs space with an open house and a visit by Bishop M. Thomas Shaw, SSJE May 10.

Numerous friends and neighbors came to see the new space, which includes classrooms and a community room.

Bishop Shaw also blessed a new granite bench outside the parish hall donated in honor of Sandy Fowler, father of St. John's rector, the Rev. Anne Fowler, by the rector's mother, Sally Fowler.

"It's wonderful to see the growth in this parish," Shaw said later. "And to see all the friends and neighbors who were there to see what was going on in the life of the church - this was a great event for evangelism."
