Our Seminarian, Steve Domienik, meets with his
St. John's Field Education Lay Committee
St. John's is blessed with many theologically educated and theology curious and questioning members. We welcome folks from all faith backgrounds and religious practices and from none; we welcome a diversity of beliefs and opinions about worship, Scripture, and tradition. We attempt to create a hospitable and safe space where all questions are welcome and all doubts respected.
St. John's is a teaching parish: we value and take seriously our ministry in discernment and formation for holy orders. We cherish the presence and gifts of the many field education students, interns, seekers, inquirers, postulants and candidates who have worked and worshipped with us over the years.
Our rector is a former college professor of literature, and brings to us skill and experience as a teacher and discussion leader. During Advent and Lent she and her student assistants offer study groups on the Bible and other books. The discussion groups typically meet at 9.00 on Sunday mornings before the liturgy. In recent Advents we have studied the Advent Gospels, Women in the Gospels, and the Annunciation in painting, music, and poetry.
In recent Lenten seasons we have read and discussed The Gnostic Gospels by Elaine Pagels, the groundbreaking work on the Nag Hammadi manuscripts, Marcus Borg's Meeting Jesus Again for the First Time, and Jesus' Family Values by Deirdre Good. In previous years we have considered spiritual and religious themes in poetry and short stories.
We hold yearly Inquirers' sessions on the history, theology, and practices of the Anglican Church, and on topical matters such as the Windsor Report. Occasionally we hold retreats to provide spiritual reflection and renewal.
