On the first Sunday of Advent, we encounter a clash of apocalyptic imagery from our readings and the inherent hope of the season as we prepare for Christ’s birth at Christmas. Nina Simone, the legend that she is, plays into this tension marvelously. While the days may seem dark, there is newness and joy to be found, if we only know where to look.
